Sa Re Ga Ma Pa is an Indian musical reality TV game show. It started in 1995, and as of April 2012 it had 16 seasons with 1076 episodes. The name “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” equals the five first notes (or swaras) in the Indian solf├Ęge (or sargam).

From 1999 till 2001, the show was hosted by the brothers Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan.

After that, Shaan started hosting the show. Later, the name “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” became known as the “brand name” of the series and completely changed the concept of the show to include public interaction through voting. This was first done in 2005, when the old show concept was completely scrapped and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 was introduced.

In February 2007, RealMedia – Zee TV in Dubai, produced and started airing Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Middle East – Pakistan Challenge 2007 for the Middle East and Pakistan viewers based on the original format of the show.

RealMedia is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. Its extension is “.rm”. It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio and is used for streaming content over the Internet. Typically these streams are in CBR (constant bitrate), but a container for VBR (variable bitrate) streams, named RMVB (RealMedia variable bitrate), has been developed.

Support of RealMedia is available in a few multimedia players for different architectures/platforms[citation needed], including RealPlayer and the Real Alternative codec pack. The open source DAP firmware Rockbox has added support for reading RM containers as of 6 July 2009, although only certain formats used in RM files are playable.

Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 was a reality series, an extension of the famous Sa Re Ga Ma Pa programme that was first aired in 1995 on Zee TV. With the new “Challenge” series, Zee TV brought 48 potential singers that are living in India.

The process had started with elimination rounds by the four mentors: Aadesh Shrivastava (Baghban fame), Himesh Reshammiya (Tere Naam & Aashiq Banaya Aapne fame), Jatin-Lalit (Pehla Nasha fame) and Ismail Darbar (HDDCS fame). The mentors picked one girl and one boy amidst 4 boys and 4 girls who took part during the course of a month. Hence, 16 contestants out of the 48 were eliminated. The 32 remaining contestants consists of 16 boys and 16 girls.

The 32 remaining contestants were later put into different Gharanas (or Groups). Each Gharana had to pick 8 contestants in total from the contestants selected through the auditions, elimination rounds and wildcard entries.

Aadesh Shrivastav’s group was the Jai Ho Gharana, Himesh Reshammiya’s group was Jai Mata Di Let’s Rock Gharana, Jatin Lalit’s group was the Dum Gharana and Ismail Darbar’s group was the Yalgaar Gharana.

From the final 32 round onwards, guest judges like Shiv, Hari, Pandit Jasraj, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik, Jagjit Singh etc. were invited to comment and judge all the remaining contestants. Each week features a different judge.

Also, from this round onwards, the public was able to vote via SMS or by phone for their favourite singer. Each week, two contestants will be eliminated until the final round.

The only three contestants to have gone through the perfect green card on first day pattern were Vinit Singh, Hemachandra, and Nihira Joshi. Nihira Joshi was the only girl out of all to have been perfect when being chosen by judges. She was also the most consistent participant throughout the competition.
